One of a facilitator’s biggest fears is getting difficult questions and/or difficult participants (usually they are one in the same). But fear no more! These three techniques can keep you in control of the session and, with practice, take your confidence up a notch!
- Flip the question back to the participant. Say “That’s a great question, what do you think?”
- Ask the Group. Say “That’s a great question, group, what do you think?”
- I don’t know. Say “I don’t know but I will find out and get back to you.” (Then do it).
Remember that people, in general, don’t like to change… unless there is something in it for them. You need to tune into Station WIIFM (What’s in it For Me?). You can do this by reminding your participants that the skills they are learning are life skills that will give them a competitive advantage in the workforce.
